Five workflows worth automating before anything else

August 26, 2026 · 7 min read

The best first automation is the one nobody has to think about. It runs, it produces something a person already reviews anyway, and if it broke tomorrow the team would notice within a day. Here are five that clear that bar.

1. Status reports

Weekly updates are assembled from sources that already exist: task boards, commits, tickets, calendars. An assistant that compiles the draft on Friday morning turns a forty-minute chore into a five-minute review.

2. Meeting follow-ups

Summaries and action items, written while the meeting is still fresh, filed where the tasks live. The failure mode to avoid is assigning nothing; every follow-up should land as a draft task with an owner.

3. Inbox triage

Not auto-replies. The assistant reads the queue, groups it, flags what genuinely needs a human today, and drafts responses for the routine half. People keep the pen; the assistant does the sorting.

4. Lead and request intake

Forms arrive at all hours. An assistant that reads each one, enriches it with what it already knows, and routes it with a suggested next step shaves hours off response time without touching your voice.

5. Document review passes

Contracts, proposals, and specs all have checklists humans apply by hand. A first pass that flags missing sections and inconsistencies is cheap to run and reduces the review to a focused read.

Start with one. Measure the minutes it returns per week. Add the second only when the first has been trustworthy for a month. Automation stacks best in small, proven layers.
